Philosophy
In order to advocate for the continuation of art in schools, one must understand why art is important to teach, especially from a relatively young age. Of the various reasons as to why art is important in education, the most crucial of those would be the students partaking in an activity that culminates around the very understanding of human existence: self-expression. In language arts, mathematics, sciences, and social sciences there may be varying degrees of right and wrong, but art is a subjective experience for the creator and the viewer. That is not to say art does not have to abide by the formal components of its own. But to a student who may enjoy making art, though they may not fully comprehend its academic principles, is still participating in a development of their self-esteem, their self-concept, and discovering what they like, do not like, and learning to make aesthetic judgements that may be based on objective aesthetics or subjective emotions. Learning to discern between those last two concepts can be the foundation for decision making across multiple subjects of their academic and personal life.
